Turning Nee Soon Into an Interactive Digital Community Experience
How BREATE transformed an illustrated map of Nee Soon into an interactive digital experience, connecting residents and visitors to local points of interest through custom illustrations, QR-enabled access and mobile-friendly content.
Nee Soon Town Council
Bringing Nee Soon's Places and Stories Into One Digital Experience
Nee Soon Town Council wanted to create an illustrated map of the Nee Soon area featuring approximately 30 points of interest, with each location connected to additional information through a digital platform.
BREATE developed the visual map, custom location icons and supporting website experience, allowing users to move beyond a traditional static map and discover individual places through dedicated digital content.
The result was a connected experience combining illustration, physical discovery and digital interaction.
More Than Creating a Traditional Neighbourhood Map
The initial requirement was to create an illustrated map featuring the different places of interest around Nee Soon. But presenting around 30 locations within a single static visual could only provide limited information.
The challenge was to make a traditional neighbourhood map informative, visual, engaging and easy to explore.
- Discover points of interest through a consistent icon system
- Browse information directly from a mobile device
- Extend the map with images, video and richer online information
Connecting Physical Discovery With Digital Content
Instead of treating the illustration and website as separate deliverables, BREATE connected them as part of one experience.
A QR code provided a bridge from the physical map to the digital platform, where users could access further information about the featured points of interest, including supporting images and video content.
This transformed the project from a static illustration into an interactive community discovery platform.
Illustrated Nee Soon Map
Turning the Neighbourhood Into a Visual Experience
BREATE created the overall illustration of Nee Soon together with the visual elements required to represent the different locations around the neighbourhood.
The objective was to create a map that was informative while remaining approachable and visually engaging.
- Overall illustrated map development
- Visual representation of locations
- Layout and information organisation
- Custom graphic elements
- Digital-ready map assets
Rather than presenting users with a conventional geographical map, the illustrated approach helped create a more accessible way to discover what each location had to offer.
Custom Point-of-Interest Icons
Creating a Consistent Visual Language Across the Map
With approximately 30 points of interest featured, users needed an easy way to distinguish and recognise different locations.
BREATE developed custom icons for the locations featured throughout the map, creating a consistent visual system that tied the individual places back to the overall Nee Soon experience.
The icon system helped make the illustration easier to understand while also giving the project its own recognisable visual identity.
Interactive Point-of-Interest Website
Extending Every Location Beyond the Map
The physical illustration provided an overview of Nee Soon, while the website allowed users to explore individual locations in greater depth.
BREATE developed supporting webpages for the featured points of interest, providing space for additional information and multimedia content that could not be presented within the map itself.
This created a two-layer experience: the map introduces the locations, while the digital experience tells the deeper story.
QR-Connected Digital Journey
Moving Seamlessly From Physical to Digital
A QR code was incorporated to connect users directly from the map to the website experience.
This allowed users encountering the map in the physical environment to immediately continue their discovery online using their smartphones.
- See the map: physical discovery
- Scan the QR: immediate mobile access
- Explore online: richer location content
Rather than requiring users to search for additional information independently, the QR-enabled journey created a direct bridge between physical map, mobile device and digital content.
Mobile-Optimised Experience
Designed Around How People Explore on the Go
Because users accessing the website through the map would naturally be using their mobile devices, BREATE considered the mobile experience as a primary part of the project rather than an afterthought.
The result was a digital experience that complemented the physical map while providing residents and visitors with a clear, mobile-friendly way to explore information on the go.
- Mobile-friendly navigation
- Clear content hierarchy
- Easy access to individual locations
- Responsive presentation
- Readable information across screen sizes
Connecting Illustration, Physical Touchpoints and Digital Experience
One illustrated environment. Three connected layers of experience: visual, connected and accessible.
A DISTINCTIVE ILLUSTRATED EXPERIENCE
Custom illustrations and icons transformed neighbourhood information into an approachable visual experience that was easier to explore.PHYSICAL MEETS DIGITAL
The map, QR code and website were designed as a connected touchpoint that moves users naturally from physical discovery to richer online content.DESIGNED FOR MOBILE EXPLORATION
A customised mobile interface made it easier for residents and visitors to explore points of interest while on the go.The Encouragement Wall
Creating Space for the Community to Participate
The project also included an Encouragement Wall, designed to invite Singaporeans to share messages of encouragement with workers and patients during a challenging period.
The original initiative positioned the wall around the idea that Singapore could overcome the period together as One Singapore.
This added another dimension to the platform, moving beyond information discovery to allow people to actively contribute to the digital experience.
